Plot - Nerja

Frigiliana, " the pearl of Axarquia". is one of the last white-washed villages of Andalucia (Andalusia).

Just six kilometers above Nerja, in the foothills overlooking the Mediterranean coast.

The Axarquia district is the easternmost region of the province of Malaga. It extends over 1,019 square kilometres. It’s western border are the Malaga mountains. It’s southern border is the Mediterranean Sea. To the north are the Sierra Almijara, Caramolos, Jobo, Alhama and Tejeda Mountains. To the east is the province of Granada.

The district is shaped like a wide arch.

Frigiliana is located 300 meters above sea level towards the eastern end of the Axarquia.
The official borders of Frigiliana encompass 39.74 square kilometers within which live 2,200 people year round. Because Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many vacation homes here, the population triples during the summer months.

Nearby towns includes Competa, famous for its wine and raisins, and Torrox, known for the Phoenician tomb found there. Directly south of Frigiliana, and only 6 kilometers away Nerja, which is famous for its beaches, the Nerja caves, and the pedestrian walkway called the Balcon de Europa.

Only 50 kilometers away, and an easy trip on the newly constructed super highway lays the capital city of Malaga. Malaga boasts a population of 1.3 million inhabitants, making it the third largest city in Spain, as well as the fastest growing metropolitan area. Along with an International airport, Malaga offers a wide range of services one would expect from a large city.

To the east is the province of Granada. One can easily drive to the capital city Granada to see the wonderful cathedral and the world famous Alhambra and Generalife. Granada is the city of dreams where a visitor can sample examples of Spanish culture throughout the centuries. If you decide to visit in the winter and you enjoy skiing, the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains offer a world class facility. The World championships were held there in 1997.

The village of Frigiliana, and particularly the historic part is a village of unparalleled beauty. The architecture recalls the pure Moorish style while respecting changes through the centuries. Thankfully, the people who live here enjoy showing their love for the town by their actions. They can be seen constantly white-washing their houses and cleaning their corners of the cobblestone streets and passageways, keeping them spotless in the same way as has been the custom for centuries. In the spring, the courtyards and patios and terraces are overflowing with flowers, which turn a stroll through town into a sweet-smelling dream.
Everything they have done has earned the town well-deserved awards and honors making Frigiliana the most honored town in Axarquia. The town received regional awards for beautification in 1961 and again in 1967. Then in 1982 Frigiliana earned its most cherished prize 1st place for beautification in all of Spain, given out by the tourism and communications ministries. Instead of resting on their laurels the towns leaders continued on and received 1st place in Andalucia in 1988 for beautification. All these distinctions only serve as objective reminders that Frigiliana, day in and day out stands alone in terms of beauty and charm. These awards also help serve to remind visitors to the Axarquia the necessity of including Frigiliana in their itineraries.

The first time you visit you will be overwhelmed and surprised at how beautiful and sparkling clean a village can be. To follow one of the many narrow passageways is to run the risk of succumbing to the enchantment of the streets. The hospitality of the people here is infectious and you would not be the first foreigner to fall in love and decide to make Frigiliana your home.

As you are discovering the streets of Frigiliana, don’t forget to stop and read at least some of the twelve ceramic plaques on the walls of the historic section, which depict the history of the Moorish people in Frigiliana.

Frigiliana is fortunate to have a wide variety of restaurant where one can enjoy a great meal. The majority of these feature local dishes with localy grown produce.

There are supermarket, restaurants and bars with nices terraces where you can eat while looking to the sea and mountains.
